Silhouetted Surgeonfish Grazing Under Belize Reef

Deep shadow envelops the space beneath a jagged reef ledge where a school of surgeonfish moves in unison. Their dark, disc-shaped bodies form sharp silhouettes against the bright turquoise water above. A thin rim of sunlight catches the edges of their scales, creating a delicate, glowing outline that separates them from the gloom. The fish graze methodically on algae clinging to the rough, porous rock surface below. Above, the water surface displays slow, glassy ripples that fracture the morning light into shifting patterns. The clarity of the water reveals fine textures in the rock and the precise alignment of the fish as they navigate the cool, pre-dawn current.
