Bioluminescent Waves on Cebu Reef Flat

Bright midmorning light falls through the soft, post-rain water column, illuminating a tight cluster of coral along a vertical reef wall. Tiny bioluminescent organisms glow within the white foam of breaking waves, creating streaks of electric blue and green against the warm orange and pink hues of the coral polyps. Suspended particles glitter like scattered diamonds throughout the blue water beyond the reef flat. The texture of the coral surface appears rough and encrusted, against the fluid motion of the surf. Individual glowing droplets hang in the air above the water line, suspended by the force of the break before falling back into the turquoise depths. One strand of kelp rests against the coral edge.
