Right Whale Mother Nursing Calf Sardinia

Sunlight penetrates the water column from above, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like scattered dust motes around a right whale mother and her calf. The mother swims just above a dense meadow of green seagrass that carpets the seabed. Her massive, dark grey skin contrasts with the pale, smooth flank of the nursing calf positioned beneath her. The low angle view emphasizes the scale of the adult against the swaying blades of grass below. Clear mountain light falls through the surface, creating shafts of illumination that define the shapes of their bodies. The water remains still, holding the pair in a moment of quiet suspension. One ray of light catches the edge of the calf's fin.
