Minke Whale Silhouette Feeding in Antarctic Krill

by Ananya Soto

A massive minke whale moves through clear turquoise water, its dark form silhouetted against the bright surface light filtering down from above. The animal opens its mouth wide, engulfing dense swarms of tiny Antarctic krill that appear as a suspended cloud of white specks. Late morning sunlight penetrates the tropical surface, creating a gradient from brilliant white at the top to deep blue below. Winter conditions keep the water crisp and cold, though the light feels warm and direct. Plankton haze softens the distant background, blurring the line between the whale's tail and the open ocean. The creature's smooth skin glistens with water droplets as it glides forward. One ripple distorts the light on the whale's back.
