Humpback Whale and Calf Surfacing Near Mumbai
by Zoey Rich
Cold moonlight spills across the surface of the Arabian Sea, illuminating a humpback whale and its calf as they breach the water near the coast of Mumbai. The massive gray skin of the adult whale glistens wetly against the dark blue depths, while the smaller calf stays close, its back breaking the surface in a slow, rhythmic motion. Fronds of kelp float in tangled clusters along the water's edge, drifting with the gentle, slow-moving ripples that disturb the otherwise still night. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing the submerged texture of the whale's skin just beneath the surface. Behind the subjects, the dark silhouette of the coastline fades into the predawn gloom, leaving only the quiet presence of the marine giants in the moonlit frame. One ripple expands outward from the whale's blowhole, catching the pale light before fading into the dark water.
