Arctic Sea Ice Ridges Norway Winter Twilight in far above surf-scalloped coastline in Norway

Arctic Sea Ice Ridges Norway Winter Twilight

by Jolene Gordon

Deep shadow covers the jagged pressure ridges of Arctic sea ice, their fractured surfaces rising in sharp, chaotic peaks against a pale winter sky. A thin rim of light catches the highest edges, turning the ice into silver silhouettes. Thick mist blurs the horizon, softening the boundary between the frozen ocean and the distant surf-scalloped coastline of Norway. Below, the dark water is barely visible through the haze, while city lights on the shore begin to glow as small, steady pinpricks in the twilight. The texture of the ice is rough and granular, marked by deep fissures and layered snow drifts. Small lights rest along the distant shore, falling across the dark water beneath the ice field.
