Silhouetted Remora on Manta Ray in Sydney Moonlight

by Caroline Reyes

Cold moonlight falls through the deep blue water, illuminating a school of suspended particles that glitter like scattered diamonds in the current. A massive manta ray glides horizontally through the frame, its dark pectoral fins stretching wide against the faint surface glow. Attached to the ray's pale ventral surface, a remora clings firmly, its flat body and sucker disc visible as a small, dark silhouette against the lighter skin of the host. The water remains still around them, showing suspended motion. Tiny bubbles drift upward from the ray's gills, catching the dim light. The edge of the remora's tail fin fades into the shadow of the ray's wing.
