Remora Hitching Ride on Manta Ray in Kelp in through a forest of kelp fronds near Sydney

Remora Hitching Ride on Manta Ray in Kelp

by Laurie Hartman

Indigo twilight water surrounds a massive manta ray gliding through a dense forest of kelp fronds near Sydney. A small remora clings firmly to the smooth, dark underside of the ray, its sucker-disk pressed against the skin. Fading blue light filters down from the dim surface, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like dust in the water column. The kelp stalks sway gently in the background, their brown-green fronds creating vertical lines that frame the marine giants. The ray's pectoral fins stretch wide, cutting through the calm water, while the remora remains perfectly still, a tiny passenger on the dark, silent journey. One kelp blade reflects the last surface light near the ray's wingtip.
