Pink Dolphin Surfacing Through Kelp in Winter Light

by Brenda Ross

Silvery predawn light falls through a dense forest of kelp fronds, illuminating the smooth, pale pink skin of a river dolphin as it breaks the surface. The water, unusually clear for a marine environment, holds suspended particles that catch the faint glow. Brownish ripples spread slowly outward from the breach, distorting the reflection of the kelp stems above. The dolphin's dorsal fin cuts through the dark water, against the translucent green and brown fronds that frame the action. Layers of kelp recede into the distance, creating a deep, submerged tunnel of vegetation. at the edge is a single bubble clinging to the curve of the dolphin's snout before rising.
