Garden Eels Swaying on Sandy Reef Slope in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Belize City

Garden Eels Swaying on Sandy Reef Slope

by Keith Landry

Tubes of translucent sand bury the lower bodies of numerous garden eels, their slender orange and cream bodies rising vertically from the pale seabed. Bright late-afternoon sunlight penetrates the crystal-clear Caribbean water, illuminating the fine grains of sand shifting around their bases. The eels sway in unison, their flexible bodies bending with the gentle current beneath the overhanging reef ledge. Fine particles float in the water column, catching the light like suspended dust. The sandy slope rises gently, creating a textured foreground that leads toward the darker, shadowed recesses of the reef structure above. A cluster of eels stands rigid against the current, their vertical alignment against the soft, undulating movement of their neighbors. The water surface ripples far above, casting faint, dancing shadows across the sandy floor.
