Ant Lion Pit in Wet Sand Midday in beside a tidal inlet near Puebla

Ant Lion Pit in Wet Sand Midday

by Alexandria Copeland

A conical depression cuts into fine, damp sand beside a tidal inlet near Puebla. The wet season keeps the grains dark and heavy, packed tight against the pit's steep, crumbling walls. Soft light from the sky after rain flattens shadows, revealing the texture of the sand's surface. A thin layer of heat haze shimmers above the ground, distorting the horizon line where the inlet meets the sky. The pit's rim is sharp and defined, against the loose, sliding debris at the slope's base. A small shadow falls across the pit's center, marking the depth of the trap. The surrounding sand shows faint, scattered tracks leading away from the edge.
