Silhouetted Hyena Crossing Volcanic Sand at Dawn in near Quito

Silhouetted Hyena Crossing Volcanic Sand at Dawn

by Nathaniel Guevara

Cold silver dawn light floods the high-altitude landscape near Quito, turning the volcanic sand into a field of muted charcoal and soft grey. A striped hyena moves in profile across the rough, grainy terrain, its dark form rendered as a stark silhouette against the pale, luminous sky. Fine dust lifts gently from the ground, swirling in the first breath of morning air. Above, dramatic clouds stack in heavy layers, their undersides catching the faint glow of the rising sun. The animal’s striped coat is invisible in shadow, defined only by the sharp outline of its ears and the curve of its spine. Behind the creature, the horizon dissolves into a hazy, cool expanse where the sky meets the darkened earth.
