Sandhill Crane on Volcanic Sand Near Nepal Stream

Soft, overcast light washes the landscape in pale gray tones beneath a sky heavy with low-hanging clouds. A sandhill crane strides across coarse, dark volcanic sand, its gray feathers blending with the muted earth. Behind the bird, a trail of deep impressions marks the path it has just taken. The ground slopes gently toward a glacial stream visible in the lower foreground, its water appearing cold and sluggish. Early summer grasses poke through the sand in sparse clumps. The crane's long legs lift with deliberate caution, casting faint, soft shadows that stretch slightly across the uneven terrain. The bird's head turns sharply, eyes fixed forward, while the volcanic grains rest on the texture of its underbelly.
