Camel Caravan Crosses Black Lava Field at Dusk
by Claire Terry
Copper-toned light spills across a stark black lava field, illuminating a caravan of camels moving toward a distant vanishing point. The ground is a textured expanse of cooled, jagged rock, its dark surface contrasting sharply with the warm glow of the setting sun. Above, stacked clouds loom in heavy layers, their undersides catching the last light while the peaks remain shadowed. The camels, burdened with sacks and wooden frames, display a layer of dried mud or frost on their coats and the rough bodywork of their loads. Their movement creates a diagonal line through the frame, showing the vastness of the landscape. The scene shows the rugged texture of the volcanic earth and the heavy, draped fabrics of the caravan against the dramatic sky. A shadow stretches long from the nearest camel's hoof, anchoring the image to the uneven terrain.
