Wildebeest Herd Crossing Mara River at Dawn in above a glacial stream near Mombasa

Wildebeest Herd Crossing Mara River at Dawn

by Penelope McDaniel

Soft overcast light washes the glacial stream near Mombasa in pale gray tones as a heavy herd of wildebeest moves through the water. Cool season air hangs low as light fog softens the distant riverbanks. Dark, wet hides glisten under the diffused sky, their rough textures against the smooth, churning surface of the stream. From behind, the animals press forward in a tight mass, heads lowered, hooves churning the silt. Their ears swivel, showing the tension of the crossing. One ripple spreads from the lead animal's flank, breaking the gray surface of the water. The scene holds a quiet, alert stillness before the next movement.
