Beluga Whale Bubble Rings in Kelp Forest Dawn in through a forest of kelp fronds in Queensland

Beluga Whale Bubble Rings in Kelp Forest Dawn

by Rosalie Castillo

Low morning light fractures through the horizon haze, casting long, soft beams across a shallow coastal expanse. A beluga whale drifts centrally, its pale skin glowing against the deep teal water. Dozens of perfect bubble rings expand outward from its blowhole, suspended in the water column like fragile glass spheres. Surrounding the whale, a dense forest of kelp fronds sways gently, their dark green stalks creating vertical lines that contrast with the whale's horizontal form. A fine plankton haze blurs the distant background, softening the edges of the kelp and blending the water into a uniform, otherworldly blue. The surface ripples slightly, catching the faint gold of the rising sun. The largest bubble ring catches the light, revealing a thin, iridescent film stretched tight against the water.
