Wind Carved Yardang Formation at Dawn Near Phoenix

by Marlene Bender

Pale ochre clay rises in sharp, wind-sculpted ridges against a hazy, pale blue sky. The low sun strikes the horizon line, painting the upper edges of the yardang formation with a thin strip of warm gold. Heat haze shimmers visibly above the flat, cracked desert floor, distorting the base of the clay spires into soft, wavy outlines. Layers of sedimentary erosion create deep grooves and vertical striations along the rock faces, showing the texture of dried mud. The landscape stretches into a muted distance where the ground meets the glowing atmospheric glow. A distinct shadow falls across the left side of the formation, at the base of the structure in the early morning light.
