Sandstone Wave Formation After Rain in Hungary

by Barrett Hodges

Golden light reflects off the wet floodplain, turning the standing water into a mirror for the sky. A massive sandstone formation rises from the silt, its surface carved into swirling, horizontal layers that mimic the motion of a frozen ocean. The rock displays bands of ochre, rust, and pale cream, deepened by recent moisture. Tall, dry grasses fringe the water's edge, swaying slightly in the afternoon breeze. The sky above is a mix of clearing blue and soft gray clouds, casting shifting patterns of brightness across the textured stone. At the base of the formation, a small puddle shows a sharp, inverted reflection of the uppermost curved ridge.
