Navajo Sand Painting at Dawn Near Window Rock

by Bobby McGuire

Fine grains of colored earth form a complex geometric pattern across the packed dirt floor of a traditional hogan. Pinks, yellows, blacks, and whites create symmetrical spirals and stepped shapes that radiate from the center. Mist rests on the low winter air, softening the edges of the painted design. Outside the open doorway, a community brush arbor stands under a gray sky, its dried branches dusted with early winter frost. Tiny droplets of drizzle glisten on the loose sand near the perimeter, disrupting the smooth texture of the artwork. The light is pale and diffused, casting no sharp shadows, only a gentle glow on the earthen pigments. One wet footprint presses into the dry sand at the edge of the circle.
