Aerial View of Wind Sculpted Yardangs in Salt Flat

by Frances Conner

Dappled light falls through a canopy of bare branches, casting sharp, shifting shadows across a vast expanse of wind-sculpted yardangs. These eroded ridges rise from a pale, cracked salt flat, their surfaces textured with deep grooves and sharp crests carved by persistent winds. Below the ridge line, ground fog clings tightly to the dry wadis and dune fields, creating a soft white sea that obscures the valley floor. The early winter season is evident in the leafless trees framing the foreground and the crisp, clear quality of the air. Layers of the landscape recede into the distance, where the salt flat transitions into darker, shadowed depressions. at the edge is a thin, white streak of salt deposit tracing the edge of a shadowed gully.
