Striped Badlands Canyon at Sunset Near Phoenix

by Leroy Hunter

Sunset light wraps the horizon, casting long shadows across undulating badlands ridges. Striped earth layers reveal bands of rust, ochre, and faded tan, etched deep by wind and water. From a low angle, the foreground slopes rise steeply, showing the scale of the eroded foothills. Late summer dust hangs in the air, caught in the motion of whipping grasses that bend sharply against the slope. The sky above holds a soft gradient of orange fading into cool violet, mirroring the warm tones of the soil below. Every ridge line cuts a sharp silhouette against the brightening sky, while deep crevices swallow the last light. One shadow stretches across a jagged rock face in the immediate foreground.
