Wind-Eroded Yardang Ridge Alice Springs
by Ronald Jones
Dappled light falls through overhanging leaves, casting shifting patches of shadow across the undulating clay surface below. From a high vantage point, the yardang formation stretches like a weathered spine through the layered foothills near Alice Springs. The turn of seasons leaves the earth in shades of ochre and dusty rose, with deep fissures cutting through the eroded ridges. Dramatic clouds gather on the horizon, their dark undersides contrasting against the bright sky. The texture of the clay is rough and pitted, showing centuries of wind action. A sharp ridge edge catches the sun, highlighting the stratified layers of sediment stacked in precise horizontal bands.
