Dawn Light on Arizona Yardang Formation in across a floodplain after rain in Arizona

Dawn Light on Arizona Yardang Formation

by Kaylee Hayes

Cold silver light spills across a flat floodplain, illuminating the sharp ridges of a wind-eroded yardang rising from the clay desert floor. The formation displays deep horizontal striations where moisture has hardened the sediment into textured bands of ochre, rust, and pale gray. Surrounding the rock, the wet ground reflects the clear sky, creating a mirror-like surface that stretches to the horizon. Sparse, dry grasses rest on the edges of the eroded slopes, their stems bent low by the wind. The scene remains still, with no movement in the air, only the stark geometry of the land against the unbroken blue. A thin line of shadow falls across the base of the ridge, marking the precise angle of the rising sun.
