Rain-Flooded Metro Underpass in Ulaanbaatar

by Gracie Cohen

Gray concrete walls line the entrance to a metro station in Ulaanbaatar, where ankle-deep rainwater pools across the pavement. The water reflects the soft, diffused light of a late morning sky, disturbed by floating debris like crumpled wrappers and small stones. A metal grate on the right side is partially submerged, its rusted bars visible beneath the surface. The air appears heavy and still, hinting at recent rainfall in early winter. Puddles stretch toward the dark tunnel opening, creating a shallow, restless path. One plastic bag rests against the wet curb, caught in the stagnant flow. The damp concrete shows dark streaks where water has run down the wall, marking the edge of the flood.
