Winter Storm Drain at Gansu Canal Lock

Dark steel grates of a storm drain dominate the foreground, their parallel bars forming strong leading lines that pull toward the shadowed canal lock chamber. A clear winter day leaves the wet pavement slick with rain, reflecting the deep blue twilight of the blue hour. Several dry maple leaves rest on the metal bars, caught in the water's flow as the drain swallows them into the darkness below. Thin rim light traces the curved edges of the grate and the droplets hanging from the metal, separating the dark infrastructure from the gloom of the canal wall. The scene rests in deep shadow, with the cold steel contrasting against the smooth, dark water surface of the lock. One drop slides off the lower edge of the grate into the pool below.
