Waves Breaking on Zanzibar Reef Ledge

by Andy Vargas

Bright tropical daylight floods the shallow water beneath a coral reef ledge near Zanzibar. White foam erupts where powerful waves crash against the outer edge of the barrier reef, sending bubbles and spray into the clear blue-green shallows. A soft haze of plankton diffuses the light, blurring the distant reef structures and showing suspended weightlessness. The water surface ripples overhead, casting shifting patterns of silver and turquoise onto the sandy bottom below. Fine particles drift slowly in the current, catching the sun's rays as they move through the mid-water column. A cluster of small, translucent plankton floats near the foreground, backlit by the bright overhead sun.
