Coral Spawning Night Zanzibar Reef Crevice in beside a reef crevice under clear water near Zanzibar

Coral Spawning Night Zanzibar Reef Crevice

by Willow Burks

Silvery winter light penetrates the exceptionally clear water, illuminating a dense cloud of gametes drifting from a reef crevice. The spawning event creates a milky suspension against the dark, textured rock of the Zanzibar reef. Slow-moving surface ripples distort the light into shifting patterns on the sandy floor below. The low angle view places the observer beneath the rising plume, showing the vertical scale of the release. Tiny white spheres float weightlessly, their collective motion creating a soft, hazy volume that contrasts with the sharp edges of the coral branches. A faint shadow of a nearby coral head falls across the foreground sand, anchoring the scene in the stillness of the deep night.
