Octopus Changing Color on Zanzibar Reef

by Hugh Matthews

Deep shadow pools around a narrow crevice in the coral reef while a pale rim light traces the edges of the water column. An octopus presses against the rough limestone wall, its skin shifting from mottled brown to a vibrant, shifting orange as it mimics the surrounding coral textures. Tiny white specks of plankton drift through the water, softening the background and reducing visibility into the distance. The early evening light filters down from above, illuminating the creature's tentacles as they rest on the uneven rock surface. The water appears clear yet slightly hazy, showing depth where the reef meets the open ocean. A small patch of green algae rests on the lower left corner of the crevice.
