Mushroom Coral in Sunlight Shafts Zanzibar Reef

by Alexis Gates

Blue water fills the frame, illuminated by distinct shafts of sunlight filtering down from the surface. Several clusters of mushroom coral rest on the sandy reef flat in the foreground, their rounded caps displaying shades of tan and muted brown. The sand beneath them is fine and pale, scattered with tiny shell fragments. Beyond the reef flat, a dark vertical wall rises, marking the edge of the shallow area. A soft haze of plankton drifts in the mid-distance, blurring the line where the blue water meets the horizon. The light creates sharp, vertical beams that cut through the suspended particles, highlighting the texture of the coral heads against the grainy sand. A shadow falls across the base of the nearest coral cluster, defining its round shape against the bright seabed.
