Sharks Circling Seamount Vancouver Kelp Shelf

by Ava Herrera

Sunlight fractures into shifting dappled patterns across the water surface, filtering through a canopy of green kelp fronds to illuminate the submerged world below. A rounded seamount rises from the sandy floor, its rocky texture visible through a soft haze of suspended plankton that blurs the distant background. Four sharks glide in a slow, synchronized circle around the peak, their grey bodies contrasting against the pale sand. The water clarity diminishes with depth, creating distinct layers of visibility. Tiny bubbles rest on the underside of the kelp leaves, catching the bright afternoon light. The edge of a submerged rock glints with a sharp highlight near the foreground, at the base of the scene in physical reality.
