Chilean Seamount Sharks Circling Underwater Glare in in Chile

Chilean Seamount Sharks Circling Underwater Glare

by Maya Vang

Sunlight pierces the turquoise water in sharp, vertical beams, illuminating a dark underwater seamount rising from the depths off the Chilean coast. A school of grey sharks circles the rocky formation in a synchronized loop, their bodies casting faint shadows on the sediment below. The water column is thick with suspended particles that glitter like scattered diamonds in the hard coastal glare of midsummer. Layers of depth recede from the bright surface down to the shadowed base of the mountain. The sharks move with slow, deliberate grace against the blue backdrop. Tiny flecks of organic matter float in the current, catching the light near the rocky outcrop.
