Blue Shark and Pilot Fish in Cape Town Kelp in along a kelp-fringed shelf near Green Point, Cape Town

Blue Shark and Pilot Fish in Cape Town Kelp

by Clyde Hampton

Deep indigo water surrounds a large blue shark gliding past a kelp-fringed shelf off Green Point. Late spring light falls through the surface, creating a dim, luminous underwater twilight. The shark's sleek skin reflects a sharp rim of blue light along its dorsal ridge, separating it from the darker depths below. A small pilot fish swims in tight formation near the shark's head, its silver scales catching the faint ambient glow. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing individual kelp fronds swaying in slow, deep currents. Shadows pool around the seabed while surface ripples distort the fading daylight above. The shark's eye remains dark and fixed, against the bright edge of its fin against the gloom.
