Dangling Roots Over Cenote Near Yokohama

by Gene Cannon

Tropical bright light floods a natural limestone sinkhole near Yokohama in late spring. Thick, weathered roots drape from the jagged ceiling, disappearing into the still, dark water below. Low-hanging clouds diffuse the sun, creating soft shadows on the moss-covered rock walls. The water reflects the pale sky and the intricate network of hanging roots, creating a mirror-like surface. Layers of depth recede from the foreground rock edge to the distant, misty opening where the sky meets the water. The wind-carved solitude is visible in the stillness of the hanging vines and the untouched surface of the pool. One root tip touches the water, creating a tiny ripple.
