Barracuda School in Tibet Ice Water Dawn in above a rock shelf sealed under winter ice in Tibet

Barracuda School in Tibet Ice Water Dawn

by Patrick Hensley

Pale dawn light penetrates the frozen surface, casting thin, vertical shafts through the exceptionally clear water. Below a jagged rock shelf, a school of barracuda swims in slow, synchronized formation. The fish move through a haze of suspended plankton that glows faintly in the low-angle sunrise. Their silver bodies reflect the pale blue of the ice above and the dark stone beneath. Slow-moving ripples distort the light just beneath the winter ice, creating shifting patterns on the rock face. The water remains perfectly still around the school, preserving the sharp edges of their fins and scales. One ray of sunlight strikes the side of the nearest fish, highlighting the metallic sheen of its flank against the deep shadow of the shelf.
