Rusting Gurneys in Arkansas Hospital Hallway in along a ward corridor with broken glass and falling plaster in Arkansas

Rusting Gurneys in Arkansas Hospital Hallway

by Eileen Lester

Pale green walls reflect the flat noon glare into the long corridor of a decaying military hospital in Arkansas. Rows of rusted steel gurneys sit abandoned along the tiled floor, their casters seized by years of neglect. Broken glass shards scatter across the ground near peeling plaster that hangs in loose strips from the ceiling. Warm shadows pool in the corners where the indirect light struggles to reach, highlighting the texture of orange oxidation on the metal frames. One window at the far end lets in harsh daylight, illuminating dust motes suspended above the debris. The hallway stretches forward with a strong perspective, drawing toward the dark threshold at the end of the ward.
