Autumn Light in Derelict Power Station Corridor in along a ward corridor with broken glass and falling plaster near Rudny

Autumn Light in Derelict Power Station Corridor

by Stephanie Solomon

Bright midmorning light falls through heavy curtains draped over high windows, casting sharp rectangular patches across the concrete floor of a long ward corridor. Broken glass shards glint near the baseboards, catching the sun in scattered sparks. Flakes of white plaster hang loosely from the ceiling and rest on the painted walls, their edges crisp against the gray concrete. No dust motes float in the air; surfaces remain surprisingly clean despite the decay. Layers of depth recede into the distance where the corridor narrows, framed by vertical lines of window frames and peeling paint. One shard of glass lies isolated on the floor, reflecting the muted gold of the autumn light filtering through the fabric.
