Bright midmorning light falls through heavy curtains draped over high windows, casting sharp rectangular patches across the concrete floor of a long ward corridor. Broken glass shards glint near the baseboards, catching the sun in scattered sparks. Flakes of white plaster hang loosely from the ceiling and rest on the painted walls, their edges crisp against the gray concrete.
