Derelict Shanghai Gym with Leaves in Corners

Dappled sunlight falls through dense tree branches, casting shifting patches of gold and shadow across the cracked concrete floor of an abandoned gymnasium near Shanghai. Fresh green leaves have banked high in the four corners where the walls meet the ceiling, forming soft mounds against the peeling white paint. The high windows are broken, allowing wind to ruffle the scattered debris of paper and plastic. Faded red Chinese characters remain visible on the far wall, their paint chipping to reveal gray plaster underneath. One basketball rests on its side near a rusted metal hoop, surrounded by a carpet of new spring growth pushing through floor cracks. The light falls heavily on the dust motes hanging in the air above the bleachers.
