Ruined Chapel Pews Amidst Nettles at Twilight in through an abandoned ceremonial court in Guatemala

Ruined Chapel Pews Amidst Nettles at Twilight

by Bennett Douglas

Deep shadows swallow the interior of a collapsed ceremonial chapel while rim light traces the jagged edges of broken stone arches. Weathered wooden pews lie shattered and half-buried in thick, green nettles that have claimed the floor. Through the open archway, dramatic clouds stack high above the courtyard, their undersides darkening against the fading twilight sky. The structure stands as a silent testament to a specific Guatemalan heritage, its stonework rough and eroded by time. Moss rests on the lower walls where moisture settles. One beam of pale light cuts across the debris, illuminating dust motes suspended in the air before hitting the wet, dark earth at the far end of the nave.
