Forsaken Chapel in Reef Rain Sunset in among collapsed cloisters in the Great Barrier Reef

Forsaken Chapel in Reef Rain Sunset

by Graham Simmons

Rich amber light from the setting sun illuminates a desolate chapel yard where collapsed stone cloisters lie buried under knee-deep nettles. Steady rain falls in visible sheets, turning the overgrown ground into a dark, glistening mud. The weathered masonry, stripped of mortar, supports no roof, only the heavy, wet vegetation pressing against the broken arches. Droplets rest on the coarse green leaves and slide down the rough, porous surfaces of the ancient stones. The horizon glows with the last warmth of the day, contrasting sharply with the cool, gray mist rising from the saturated earth. A jagged fragment of a stone pillar rests in the mud near the foreground, its top edge sharp against the fading light.
