Dawn Light on Albanian Chapel Ruin in among toppled columns and nettles in Albania

Dawn Light on Albanian Chapel Ruin

by Brenda Brennan

Cold silver light from an overcast sky spills across the threshold of a crumbling chapel in Albania. The stone floor is entirely blanketed by a thick layer of brown pine needles, softening the sharp edges of broken masonry. To the left, a toppled column lies among tall, green nettles that push through the winter grass. The heavy gray clouds above diffuse the dawn light, eliminating harsh shadows and casting a uniform, muted glow over the ruins. Weathered stone surfaces show deep gray cracks and patches of damp moss. The threshold acts as a dividing line between the dark interior and the pale, misty exterior. One needle rests on a jagged piece of white limestone near the corner of the frame.
