Night Ruins of Zhejiang Chapel in in Zhejiang

Night Ruins of Zhejiang Chapel

by Corinne Hewitt

Heavy gray clouds press low over the skeletal frame of a chapel in Zhejiang, its roof collapsed to reveal a starless, deepest night sky. Thick green nettles surge through the gaps in the floor, swallowing rows of splintered wooden pews that lean at broken angles. A faint rim of pale light traces the jagged edges of the remaining walls, separating the dark interior from the overcast void outside. The wood has turned a dull, water-stained brown, while the nettles display sharp, serrated leaves that gleam with a wet sheen. In the background, the silhouette of the tower fades into the mist, leaving only the texture of rotting timber and the sharp points of invasive plants visible against the gloom. One shard of white bone lies near the base of a broken pew leg.
