Nettles Grow Under Tables in Roofless Winter Refectory

by Derrick Figueroa

Tall green nettles erupt from the dusty floor, rising beneath the dark silhouettes of wooden tables inside a roofless nave. The structure stands near Ait Melloul, stripped of its ceiling to reveal a perfectly clear sky. Golden hour light floods the space from behind, turning the remaining walls and table legs into stark black shapes against the bright horizon. Winter has stripped the surrounding vegetation, leaving the ground bare and cold under the encroaching greenery. The nettles cluster densely between the table legs, their serrated leaves catching the low sun. Shadows stretch long and thin across the packed earth floor, ending abruptly at the base of the nearest table leg.
