Ruined Nepal Cloisters Trees Asphalt Noon

by Marlene Bailey

Late autumn light flattens across a cracked street where asphalt has surrendered to the earth. Thick tree roots split the gray pavement, pushing up jagged shards of stone and soil. Behind the road, the skeletal remains of cloisters stand silent, their stone arches dark against a sky heavy with low, gray clouds. The overcast sky diffuses the noon glare, softening shadows on the weathered masonry. Moss rests on the damp stone bases, turning the ruins a deep, wet green. The silhouetted trees stretch upward, their bare branches cutting into the bright, cloudy ceiling. One root pushes through a gap in the stone, revealing the rough texture of the decay beneath the smooth, broken surface.
