Dawn Light on Vermont Chapel Ruins in among toppled columns and nettles in Vermont

Dawn Light on Vermont Chapel Ruins

by Aaron Dunlap

Pale gray fog drifts through the skeletal remains of a stone chapel in Vermont before dawn. Thick tree roots have split the masonry, weaving through broken arches and over crumbling columns. Hanging vines drape from the roofline, their dark green leaves against the pale stone. Nettles cluster in the foreground, swaying slightly in the still air. A thin rim of light catches the edges of the ruins, highlighting rough textures and deep shadows. The dry season leaves the ground bare, exposing the stark interplay between stone and vegetation. Moss rests on the lower stones, adding patches of emerald to the gray decay.
