Honeyed Light in Anand Monastery Cloister Ruins

by Rhonda Dyer

Honeyed evening light floods the interior of a cloister passage in Anand, pooling in shallow depressions on the damp stone floor where recent rain has left wet patches. Open prayer niches carved into the crumbling masonry face the sky, their dark interiors against the warm orange glow on the exterior edges. Rough, weathered surfaces of the aged walls sit beside smooth, glistening tiles that reflect the fading sun. Deep, elongated shadows stretch along the base of the walls, showing the depth of the architectural decay. A small puddle rests on the corner of a stone block, catching the last rays of light.
