Silhouetted Ruins of Hong Kong Chapel in Fog in among collapsed cloisters near Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong

Silhouetted Ruins of Hong Kong Chapel in Fog

by Adriana Irwin

Thick grey fog swallows the collapsed stone cloisters near Yau Ma Tei, leaving only the jagged outlines of the forsaken chapel yard visible against the fading twilight sky. Knee-deep nettles rise in chaotic green waves across the foreground, their sharp leaves trembling in the wind that sweeps through the empty, roofless rooms. The stone arches stand as dark silhouettes, stripped of detail by the backlighting, while the overgrown vegetation bleeds into the mist. Deep shadows pool within the broken masonry, against the pale, diffuse light filtering through the fog. One, thin vine hangs loosely from a fractured pillar, its tip brushing the damp earth below.
