Bioluminescent Jellyfish Drifting in Winter Japanese Kelp

by Camille Cisneros

Pale blue light emanates from translucent bell shapes suspended in a dark, churning current. The jellyfish bodies glow with a soft, rhythmic pulse, contrasting against the deep indigo water. Above them, thick kelp fronds sway in the current, their green-brown stalks blurred by the shallow depth of field. A fine haze of plankton particles fills the space between the foreground subject and the distant kelp forest, creating a diffuse, milky barrier. The water surface reflects a faint, clear mountain light from above, illuminating the upper canopy of the kelp while the depths remain shadowed. Tiny bubbles rest on the gelatinous surfaces, catching the ambient glow. The trailing tentacles fade into the darkness, ending in a sharp, glowing tip.
