Minke Whale Feeding on Krill in Busan Waters

by Camila Rosas

Soft gray light falls through the water column, illuminating a massive minke whale suspended in early winter seas near Busan. The animal's smooth, slate-gray skin glistens under the diffused midday sun that penetrates the surface. Thousands of tiny, translucent krill swarm around the whale's open mouth, forming a glittering cloud of suspended particles. Fine silt and organic debris float in the current, catching the light like scattered diamonds against the deep blue backdrop. The whale's eye remains dark and still, its baleen plates visible as a dark fringe inside the gaping maw. Tiny bubbles rest on the wet skin near the blowhole, while the water's density creates a weightless suspension of the feeding event. A faint ripple distorts the light just above the dorsal fin.
