Bryde's Whale Lunges Through Sardine Ball Honolulu

by Bernard Tyson

Hard coastal glare penetrates the turquoise water, illuminating a massive Bryde's whale as it lunges upward with its mouth wide open. The creature's grey skin glistens with wet sheen against the bright surface light. Thousands of silver sardines swirl in a dense, chaotic bait ball, their scales flashing like tiny mirrors. Suspended sand particles glitter in the sunbeams, creating a field of suspended dust. The whale's powerful tail fin sweeps through the water, displacing the school of fish. At the edge of the frame, a single sardine drifts away from the main cluster, its silver flank catching the harsh midmorning sun.
