Sperm Whale Descending Near Osaka Dawn

by Joan Bradshaw

A massive sperm whale sinks vertically through exceptionally clear monsoon water near Osaka, its dark grey skin against the pale azure depths. Low sun light strikes the horizon haze, casting a soft glow across the slow-moving surface ripples that stretch across the panoramic view. The creature's textured skin shows faint scratches and barnacle clusters along its flanks as it moves downward. Tiny suspended particles drift in the water column, illuminated by the faint morning light filtering from above. The whale's head tilts slightly forward, its blowhole sealed tight against the pressure. At the edge of the frame, the water transitions from bright surface blue to deep indigo shadows.
